The Poughkeepsie (N.Y.) Journal today published a generally favorable article about camera phones including listing a variety of applications. I'm quoted several times in the article so you might not be shocked to learn that I discuss the useful business/social applications for camera phones!
I emphasized that camera phones can promote individual liberties when people take photos to document abuses by the police, military, government, etc., and noted (as I recently wrote in this Weblog) that totalitarian regimes hate camera phones.
Greg Clayman, vice president of the online/wireless community UPOC, says in the article, "'What happens when there's 100 million people walking around, and they all have a camera?'' he said. 'The next Rodney King, it's going to be (exposed) by a guy who has a cell phone.'''
No local problems
The reporter, Nik Bonopartis, writes that in the Poughkeepsie area camera phones haven't caused problems. One local health club forbids members from using all cellular phones in the workout areas and ecourages people to make calls in the lobby. Another health club discussed camera phones but since there hasn't been a problem, the club hasn't set any rules.
A spokesman for Verizon Wireless said network traffic has increased by two million messages a month since it introduced its first camera phone.
