After four months of delays, the new Motorola V600 GSM camera phone (see below) started shipping and will be available from AT&T Wireless, according to a report by Bloomberg News in the Miami Herald.
Bloomberg News reports the V600 will be available in most AT&T retail stores by next week, noting the phone is on the AT&T Web site for $174.99 after a $195 rebate. However, I just checked and see the phone being offered for $199.99, based upon a retail price of $369.99 minus an instant rebate of $170.
Either the offer has been changed since the article was written or the price is based upon the location in which you're purchasing the phone. Typically, these instant rebates require a two-year contract and billing by credit or debit card.
Feature-rich, but VGA
The clamshell-shaped V600 includes lots of features, although it offers a mere VGA camera.
AT&T's description of the camera claims it can "capture vibrant high resolution images." This is, obviously, a lie since VGA is nowhere close to what people consider to be "high resolution." Anyone who describes VGA camera phones as "high resolution" should be fired.
There's a 4x digital zoom, video recording, Bluetooth, a speakerphone, voice-activated dialing and a light with four colors on the cover that can be personalized by color depending upon the incoming phone number.
Verizon still testing
The article notes that Verizon Wireless is still testing Motorola's CDMA V810 camera phone. That phone, like the V600, was supposed to be available at the end of 2003.
