In another win for the technological morons, Washington County in Wisconsin has banned camera phone use by county employees without written permission of w worker's employerr, according to an article in gmtoday.
The director of the county's human resources, Gary Moschea, started "thinking" (if you could use that term based upon his camera phone thoughts) about camera phones when he saw his two children using them.
"In our never ending effort to keep up with technology," Moschea says in the article, he asked the county's board of supervisors to ban camera phones, and all five of those genuises agreed.
Luddite thinking
An "effort to keep up with technology"? I guess "keeping up" means being scared and ignorant about technology.
Why was Moschea so concerned about camera phones? He's afraid that employees working in hospitals and other public buildings will take inappropriate photos of people.
The article reports that "Moschea said he did not want to have photos of county clients end up on the Internet without their knowledge or approval, which could lead to lawsuits."
Really incompetent employees?
If Washington County's public employees are so stupid that they will take photos of their "clients," the county has a bigger problem than camera phones. Indeed, I suggest that Moschea be fired.
As head of human services he oversees, I assume, the hiring of employees who cannot, apparently, be trusted to act appropriately.
And where, I ask again, is the cellular industry in all this? Are the local cellular operators doing anything to highlight the stupidity of the board's decision?
Taking action
Are the cellular operators writing letters to the editor of local newspapers? Are they highlighting the value of camera phones for businesses?
Are they highlighting how healthcare workers -- emergency medical personnel and doctors -- are using camera phones for medical purposes?
Where are the operators' marketing and public relations people? Camera phones should be banned in certain circumstances, as I've written.
Marketing incompetence
The blanket banning of camera phones in Washington County illustrates not only how those government officials are technological dolts but also how the wireless industry has been incompetent in effectively marketing the value of these devices.
How many shots across the bow -- nay, direct hits -- does the cellular industry need to take before it fires back?
