A member of Taiwan's Directorate General of Telecommunications (DGT) will try to persuade camera phone manufacturers to install features that discourage privacy abuses, according to an article in The China Post.
Several elected representatives from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party said camera phones have become the hottest selling consumer item in the country. They asked the DGT to take action to prevent men from secretly photographing women in inappropriate circumstances, such as taking photos up their dresses, the article says.
The representatives want the government to require camera phone manufacturers to enable loud alarms -- greater than 65 decibels -- to alert people that a photo is being taken. The representatives also want future trade negotiations to discuss the requirement that handset vendors in other countries -- especially the United States -- add the alerting feature.
Arrests
Several men in Taipei have been arrested for using camera phones to take photos up women's skirts. The men said they got the idea after watching Japanese pornography tapes.
Perhaps every porno tape should have an alarm that sounds whenever the tape is inserted into a VCR!
