Everett Alvarez High School in Salinas, Calif. haas banned cellular phones because of cheating, according to an Associated Press article published in the Daytona Beach, Fla. News-Journal.
The high school banned camera phones after a teacher caught a student taking a photo of a test. The student didn't have time to transmit the image.
The Salinas Union High School District has banned "electronic signaling devices" in schools since April 2003, but individual schools are able to decide how to enforce the ban.
My view
I believe cellular phones -- including camera phones -- should not be banned from schools. I think students should be informed how to properly use -- and not abuse -- camera phones. That means students should not be allowed to use phones while in the classroom, but should be allowed to use them outside the school.
I also think schools should consider using camera phones as part of the educational process, although I realize it's still early for this to occur.
