As I wrote this morning, writer Xeni Jardin spoke today on National Public Radio's "Day to Day" program about the Department of Defense's April 24 Directive on using wireless devices.
You may listen to the streaming audio version of Xeni's report with NPR host Alex Chadwick. But if you've been reading the Weblog and other media reports about the Agence France-Presse article saying the Department of Defense has banned camera phones (not accurate), you won't learn much, if anything.
For her report, "Phonecams on the Front Lines," Xeni recorded a few sound bites from a military spokesman. He says that with everyone carrying cellular phones, RIM BlackBerrys and other wieless devices capable of text, voice and images, it's crucial that any transmissions from these devices be highly encrypted or not allowed on any Department of Defense network.
The spokesperson tells Xeni, "...we don't want to be in a situation where any guy with a scanner can basically figure out what we are about to do."
