South Korean camera phone manufacturers -- already a major force in the global camera phone market -- intend to improve their position in the higher end market by emphasizing megapixel handsets, according to an article in Korea IT News.
"In a bid to take leadership in the emerging world high-end mobile phone market, major mobile handset makers in Korea including Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, and Pantech affiliates plan to supply some 10 million units of megapixel camera phones combined, in the second half of this year," the article says.
Korea IT News reports Samsung this year will produce six million megapixel handsets for domestic and overseas markets, representing 20 percent of its total handset sales. During the second half of this year, LG Electronics plans to ship two million megapixel camera phones in Korea and one million units overseas.
Pantech's market bid
Pantech, another major Korean cellular handset vendor, plans to sell one million megapixel handsets overseas and 500,000 in Korea this year.
The article quotes a manager at Pantech saying, ""To grab second place in the domestic market and 6th spot in the global mobile handset market this year, we should reap significant results in high-end camera phone market. We will augment our brand image by supplying megapixel products ahead of competitors."
