Pixart Imaging, the fourth largest designer of CMOS sensors, predicts dramatic revenue increases because of the booming camera phone market, according to a Reuter's article. The Taiwanese company also hopes to offer an IPO by the end of this year.
Sen Huang, president of Pixart, says in the article, "We made about T$1.8 billion (US$5.3 million) revenue last year, and our internal business plan was for T$2.4 billion for this year. But looking at our January-to-May revenues, the full year should be much more than that."
Pixart's competition in the CMOS sensor market includes the top-selling OmniVision Technologies, Hynix Semiconductor and Toshiba. The largest segment for Pixart's sensors is for optical computer mice, but the camera phone business is the fastest growing, Reuter's reports.
Frightening growth
Huang says, "Camera phones are growing so fast that it is almost frightening, and from phones, cameras are spreading to other devices." The company's president believes cameras will be built into all notebook computers because the cost of including modules is so inexpensive.
Late in the third quarter Pixart will begin producing 1.3 megapixel CMOS sensors, according to an article in DigiTimes. The company has been mass producing CIF and VGA CMOS sensors.
Unlike its competitors, Pixart doesn't own its own manufacturing plants and outsources its semiconductor manufacturing to United Microelectronics in Taiwan.
