Pantech & Curitel, the third largest South Korean handset manufacturer, has announced it developed a three megapixel CMOS camera phone module that will be used in two handsets, PH-K1000V and PH-S5000V, that are slated for introduction this year, according to an article in The Korea Herald.
The module is designed to work with a mechanical shutter, offering the possibility of more shutter speeds.
On July 1, 2004 the company introduced its a two megapixel camera phone with an optical zoom. Pantech & Curitel last year sold nine million handsets overseas and three million in South Korea.
The company expects sales this year to increase 20 percent, making it the world's sixth largest handset vendor.
Competition
It seems that Pantech and Samsung are competing head-to-head in the camera phone megapixel race. The second largest South Korean handset vendor, LG Electronics, is taking a more wait-and-see approach, according The Korea Herald.
LG in June debuted a two megapixel camera phone, SD330, and is waiting to gauge customer reactions before announcing plans for any three megapixel handset.
