Verizon Wireless is sponsoring a nationwide Urban Challenge event for college students who must figure out clues to find 12 checkpoints around their city, photograph themselves at each checkpoint and return to the race headquarters in less than five hours, according to an article in the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Verizon will loan each team of students an LG VX6000 camera phone. The Urban Challenge Web site describes the uses of the phone during the contest:
"* Calling your support team for help with checkpoint clues
"* Reading checkpoint clues via text messaging
"* Answering trivia questions during the race
"* Sending your race photos to yourself and others"
The Urban Challenge raises money for Big Brothers Big Sisters and winners receive prizes and a chance to compete in the national championship. The winning team in each local event wins $1,000 and there also are LG backpacks, hats, a free LG phone and a $50 Verizon Wireless coupon.
Win-win situation
I like these sort of events. Sponsors gets publicity and, perhaps, additional business, participants learn about camera phones and can win prizes and, in the case of the Urban Challenge, a good organization receives a contribution.
