Qualcomm today announced it will incorporate Microsoft's Windows Media technology into its chipsets to faciliate audio via Windows Media Audio (WMA) and Windows Media Video (WMV).
Chipsets with WMA and WMV will be available in the first quarter of 2005.
The press release says, "QUALCOMM’s integrated Mobile Station Modem solutions will enable acceleration of Windows Media codecs to provide superior decoding performance and lower power consumption, resulting in an enhanced user experience.
"This agreement leverages the power of QUALCOMM’s MSM chipsets with the flexibility of Microsoft’s Windows Media codecs to provide faster time-to-market for multimedia-rich wireless handsets."
Qualcomm likes multimeda, integration
I know a bit about Qualcomm's strategy and the company is a big proponent of chipsets integrating a variety of multimedia processing capabilities. The more feature-rich the chipsets, the higher the price.
Qualcomm believes integrated chipsets result in better performance, superior battery life, faster time-to-market and lower-cost chipsets compared to more discrete components in cellular phones.
