Samsung Electro-Mechanics, the third largest provider of camera phone modules, aims to be the number one provider with 39 percent of the global market by 2007, according to an article in The Korea Times.
The company sold 19.2 million camera phone modules last year, an increase of 500 percent compared to 3.2 million the previous year. Samsung Electro-Mechanics' worldwide market share was 13 percent in 2004 compared to three percent in 2003 when it was the ninth largest provider of modules.
"Samsung Electro-Mechanics developed the world's first mobile handset [to] use 2- and 3-megapixel camera modules with auto-focus and optical zoom functions in April last year," The Korea Times reports. "The company will begin commercial production of auto-focus and optical zoom enabled 1-megapixel camera modules in its production complex in Pusan starting this year."
