Three months after Saudi Arabia lifted its ban on camera phones, the Saudi cellular operator AlJawal and Nokia announced AlJawal in the first half of this year would offer the country's first MMS service, using Nokia's multimedia messaging platform, according to an article in AME Info (see below).
The article reports, "With the launch of the commercial MMS service, ALJAWAL will be able to offer its 9.6 million mobile subscribers services such as person-to-person MMS, which is a greatly enriched version of SMS with the capability of sending video clips, pictures and voice or sounds combined with text messages."
As I previously wrote, the Saudi Arabian government realized that cellular operators wouldn't be able to offer full-fledged 3G services if camera phones weren't part of the mix. The government could have demanded handset vendors produce 3G phones without cameras but that would have increased the cost of the handsets.
