Edward Goto sent me an e-mail pointing to The New York Times calling camera phones "last year's novelty." The article notes that the wireless industry is "struggling to find the new must-have feature to drive sales," the way camera phones drove sales last year.
The Times references statistics by research firm Ovum that says the success of camera phones resulted in handset sales of 670 million, an increase of 25 percent. Ovum says sales are expected to increase only eight percent this year.
Hmmm. That's a bit simplistic. Camera phones certainly helped increase sales but picture taking isn't the only reason people purchase handsets. How about better color screens and games and music capabilities?
As for the article dimissing camera phones as a novelty.....last year's novelty is today's -- and will be tomorrow's -- revolutionary communications technology.
