A key issue revolves around a teacher who last month was filmed masturbating while watching television by himself in a locked classroom. The video is believed to have been taken with a camera phone and no one seems to know who shot the it.
The video is available on the Internet and on cellular phones.
Diverse opinions
Some Singapore educators think cellular phones should be banned; others do not.
I believe, like some of the people quoted, that schools should teach proper use of technology, not ban it.
A retired school principal, Anthony Loh, is against recording the incident and circulating the video. However, he doesn’t believe phones should be banned.
“'We cannot escape from the fact that technology will be there. We should train our students to be responsible and accountable for their actions. Even if we control technology in the school, we cannot do so in the home or outside.”
Other incidents
The article also lists several other camera phone-related incidents in Singapore over the past few years, including camera phones used to film students being beaten by other students.
