Camera phone photos sent to Australian park rangers by Mark Valentine, who got lost in the woods, has helped rescuers find him, his son and niece, according to News.com.au.
The three hikers got lost in Grampians National Park in western Victoria. Valentine used his cellular phone to first call the rangers and then send photos of his location.
Emergency workers had been searching for the three people, and the photos showed they were looking in the wrong area, the article reports. Police Inspector Martin Dorman said that without using the phone to call the authorities and to send photos, it might have taken several more days to locate the hikers.
Luckily, there was cellular coverage. Obviously, that’s not always the case in national parks and other mountainous terrain.
