U.K., South Korea test DAB and mobile TV technology

The U.K. and South Korea for six month are conducting mobile television tests to study DAB protocols for wireless television. The tests will examine such parameters as receiver performace, digital rights management, coverage and chipsets (http://c.moreover.com/click/here.pl?e549642501&e=1702).

The British and Korean governments as well as BT, LG and Samsung are conducting the tests.  The BBC, ITV and the Cartoon Network are providing content.

Qualcomm creates single chip for three wireless TV protocols

Qualcomm today announced it has developed a Universal Broadcast Modem (UBM) chip that supports three major wireless television protocols:  Its own FLO technology as well as Digital Video Broadcasting - Handheld (DVB-H) and one-segment Integrated Services Digital Broadcasting - Terrestrial (ISDB-T).

Qualcomm says the single-chip's features include:

*  Support for the entire UHF bandwidth of 470 MHz - 862 MHz

*  Tunable modes of 5 MHz, 6 MHz, 7 MHz and 8 MHz channel bandwidths

*  Support for single- and multi-frequency networks

The UBM is designed to work with Qualcomm's Mobile Station Modem baseband chipsets, but it also can be used with other products, the company says.

Sample quantities are expected to be available in the first quarter of 2007.
